Child Proofing your Home

Here is the typical development of the movement of your baby:

  • At 3-4 months infants are reaching and grabbing for toys.
  • At 4-6 months they are rolling over
  • At 6-7 months they are sitting independently
  • At 9-11 months they are crawling.
  • At 12-18 months toddlers have the coordination to grab and pull and may take their first steps
  • Between 18 months and 3 years they begin to explore their surroundings, possibly grabbing at dangerous things.

Here are a few tips to help make your home safe:

  • Install outlet plugs
  • Place safety gates at stairwells or rooms that have not been child-proofed
  • Remove sharp, small objects from the floor and areas that your child may be able to reach or climb
  • Remove cords from areas that your child may be playing around, such as cribs, play pens, or play
  • Anything that can fit through a toilet paper roll is a potential choking hazard
  • Hanging toys (mobiles, etc.) should be out of baby’s reach and removed when children begin to stand.

Car Seat Regulations

The following information was referenced from www.healthychildren.org. All children under age eight must be restrained in a child safety seat or booster seat. The safest place in the car for a child is in the back seat. New studies now recommend all children under the age of 2 be restrained in a rear-facing car seat to reduce the amount of stress on the neck and spine.
